Thimphu

Trashi-Chho Dzong

The fortress of the glorious religion houses the office of His Majesty the King of Bhutan and office of Chief Religious abbot of Bhutan. It was built by Gyelwa Lhanangpa in 13th century as Do-ngyen dzong in the place where we can see Dechen Phodrang. The Present Dzong was built by 3rd king after the capital was shifted from Punakha.

Druk Wangyel Chorten

It is located 30 minutes away by drive from Thimphu town on Thimphu-Punakha highway. There are 108 stupas perched on Dochula pass which was built in 2003 to honor the Bhutanese soldiers who lost their life in battle and to commemorate the victory. The view of Himalayan Mountain forming a horizon makes this pass more beautiful.

Memorial Chorten

It is located near the heart of town which was built in memory of 3rd king by queen mother Azhi Phuntsho choden in 1974.

Takin Preserve Area

It is located at upper Motithang in Thimphu, the Takin is Bhutan’s national animal and it is considered as very rare animal with the goat face and cow’s body which is believed to be created by religious master Drukpa Kuenley.

Cheri Monastery

It is located 16 km away from Thimphu town and is one the sacred places in Bhutan which was blessed by Zhabdrung, Guru Rinpoche and Phajo Drugom Zhipo. One will take approximately 2 hours to hike up to the temple.

Bhutan Postal Museum

The Bhutan Postal Museum was inaugurated to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of fourth King Jigme Singay Wangchuk and has a huge collection of various stamps from decades. One can also make your personal stamps and use it for sending postcards to your family, friends and loved ones.

Phajoding Temple

It is located on adjacent to Mountain overlooking the Thimphu Valley. It will take approximately 3 hours to hike up to the temple from the road point and the place was blessed by religious master Phajo Drugom Zhipo in 12th century.

Dodeydra Monastery

It was started by 13th Je-Khenpo, Yonten Thaye in 18th century and there we can see 3 main temples dedicated to three different religious figure and protective deity. One will take approximately 3 and half hour to hike up to the monastery, where we will get a bird eye view of whole Thimphu valley.

Buddha Dordenma

It is located on hill top 10 minute drives from the main town. It is one of the largest statue of Buddha (51.5m) consecrated in 2015 which is made out of bronze and gilded in gold.

Dechenphodrang

Dechenphodrang monastery means the “Palace of great bliss”. The monastery is located 10 minutes’ drive from town where it houses old artifacts including 12th century paintings, statue of Buddha, Zhanbdrung and it is a monastic school which houses more than 200 monks.

Zangthopelri Temple

It is located just below the main town, it is a private temple built in 1990 by Dasho Aku Tongmi, a former coronal according to the prophecy given by the religious master Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche. The temple is three storied representing the heavenly abbot of Guru Rinpoche.

Changangkha Temple

It is located on a hill top of Thimphu valley and built in 12th century by son Nima of religious master Phajo Drugom Zhipo. Every child born in this valley visits the temple and seeks the protection from the local protecting deity which has been followed as a tradition.

Zorig Chusum

It is a school for 13 different traditional arts and crafts located in Kawangjangsa 5 minutes away from town. One can see students learning different arts and crafts for specializing for years in the particular fields.

National Textile Museum

It is located in the Thimphu town showcasing the art of Bhutanese arts of weaving and textiles. The Queen Mother Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuk is the patron of the museum enabling all the visitors to witness different art of weaving techniques, local dress and textiles made by both the genders.

National Library

It is located in Kawajangsa 5 minutes’ drive from Thimphu town. It was first established by Her Majesty Ashi Phuentsho Choden and it has rich collection of importand and rare documents on Bhutan.

Tango Monastery

The Tango monastery is located on the adjacent mountain of Chari monastery. It is approximately 16km away from Thimphu town and it will take one hour to hike up to monastery and the place was blessed by Zhabdrung.

Simtokha Dzong

It is located 10 minutes away by drive from town and it is the first dzong built by Zhanbdrung during his reign in 17th century.  Today it houses around 200 monks who lives and study there.

Simply Bhutan Museum

The museum shows variety of old aged traditions of Bhutanese life and artifacts used by the people of olden times. One can see various arts and crafts, live performance of traditional songs and dances.

Folk Heritage Museum

The museum was opened in 2001 with the initiative of Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk. The museum displays old artifacts used by our ancestors in their daily life’s and living made in their olden times.
