Bumthang Cultural Trek

Overview

Bumthang is the religious heartland of the nation and homes for many Buddhist masters and auspicious temples. The three-day trek is ideal for average walkers as the altitude does not go over 3,400 metres. The trek crosses several villages and routes through the Bumthang countryside providing an excellent opportunity to interact with the rural people and understanding the rural life of Bhutan.

Itenerary

Day 1

Arrive Paro

On arrival at Paro airport, you will be received by our representative and take you for sightseeing and transferred to your hotel in Paro.

Day 2

Paro Sightseeing

Hike to Taktsang (Tiger Nest). Then visit to Kyichu temple (one of the oldest temples built in 7th century by Tibetan King Songtshen Gompo. Overnight at hotel in Paro

Day 03

Paro– Thimphu

After breakfast, drive to Thimphu and sightseeing in Thimphu (Buddha point, memorial chorten, Heritage museum, Changangkha temple, ZorigChusum and Takin zoo). By evening Thimphu city tour and night in Thimphu

Day 04

Thimphu - Trongsa

Drive to Trongsa vai Dochhu-la pass (3000m) where on a clear day you can see the view of various mountain ranges. After the sightseeing at Dochhu-la, drive for lunch at Wangduephodrang and then drive to Trongsa crossing the Chele-la pass which is traditional boundary between east and west. Overnight at Trongsa

Day 5

Trongsa - Bumthang

In the morning, visit to Trongsa Ta-Dzong (watch tower) and visit to Trongsa Dzong which is ancestral abode of Bhutan’s royal family and then we proceed to Bumthang. After lunch, visit to 17th century Jakar Dzong and Kurjey temple. Overnight at Bumthang

Day 6

Bumthang – Ngang Lhakhang (14km, approximately 6hrs)

The trek begins from there following the Chamkhar River and taking us through forest of blue pines and scrub bamboos. You will pass through different villages and temples and overnight camp at the village.

Day 7

Ngang Lhakhang – Ugyenchholing Palace

The trail ascends gradually through juniper forest towards Phephe-la pass (3340m). From there, trail descends to Tang valley and arriving at Ugyenchholing village (2850m). Overnight at village

Day 8

Ugyenchholing – Bumthang

In the morning, hike to Ugyenchholing palace (a beautiful private mansion) and then drive back to Bumthang. On the way, visit to Mebar-Tso where Terton Pema Lingpa has said to discovered the religious treasure in the 15th century. Overnight in Bumthang

Day 9

Bumthang - Punakha

In the morning, visit to Jambay lhakhang of 7th century and Tamshing Lhakhang built by Terton Pema Lingpa. After that, drive to Punakha with lunch en route. Overnight in Punakha

Day 10

Punakha – Paro

Visit ChimiLhakhang in morning and drive to Paro. After lunch leisure time (shopping or Paro town tour)

Day 11

Depart from Paro Airport

After breakfast, drive to airport for flight to onward destination.
